Rationale: Malnutrition is common in rehabilitation patients and affects recovery.BMI may miss deficits.This study evaluates prevalence and severity using GLIM, BCA and dietary assessment and examines associations with functional outcomes.
Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 47 adult patients admitted to the rehabilitation unit. Nutritional assessment was conducted using BIA and the GLIM criteria. Functional status was evaluated through HGS measurements using a Squegg device; however, only 19 patients were able to complete the assessment due to clinical limitations. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis.
Results: Among the samples(32 M,15 F)the BMI classification revealed that 29.7% were of normal weight 46% were overweight 10.6% were underweight and 12.7% were classified as obese. According to the GLIM criteria 80.8% of the patients were identified as severely malnourished while 19.1% were moderately malnourished. Low SMM was detected in 80.8% of the patients and 87.2% exhibited increased fat mass indicative of sarcopenic obesity. A reduction in LM was observed in 51% of the patients. A phase angle of <4° was noted in 46.8% of the patients suggesting compromised cellular health. ICW depletion was present in 80.85% of the patients and ECW expansion was observed in 17% indicating a fluid imbalance. Among the patients who were able to perform the HGS assessment (n=19) only 26% demonstrated normal muscle strength indicating significant functional impairment in the majority of patients.

Conclusion: Severe malnutrition is prevalent among rehabilitation patients including those with normal or high BMI highlighting limitations of traditional screening.Integrating GLIM with body composition and functional assessment supports early identification and improves recovery outcomes.
