Rationale: Bariatric surgery is a process that significantly affects nutritional habits and nutritional status. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional habits and nutritional status of individuals who underwent bariatric surgery (BS group) and those who did not (NS group).

Methods: This study was conducted with a total of 130 individuals, including those who had undergone bariatric surgery (n=65; 6–24 months postoperatively) and those who had not (n=65). Nutritional habits were assessed using a questionnaire form. Nutritional status was determined based on dietary intake records obtained through a 24-hour dietary recall method.

Results: Regular main meal consumption was reported by 56.9% of the BS group and 30.8% of the NS group (p=0.003). The prevalence of having a snack consumption habit was 93.8% in the BS group and 72.3% in the NS group (p<0.001). Mean daily protein intake (g) in women was 48.41±18.11 in the BS group and 80.32±30.09 in the NS group (p<0.001), while in men it was 56.72±22.02 and 110.26±44.38, respectively (p<0.001). Mean daily carbohydrate intake (g) in women was 61.81±26.18 in the BS group and 202.20±84.65 in the NS group (p<0.001), and in men it was 74.77±52.20 and 261.11±148.78, respectively (p<0.001). Mean daily fat intake (g) in women was 51.29±21.69 in the BS group and 87.34±29.76 in the NS group (p<0.001), while in men it was 57.63±21.86 and 113.53±52.50, respectively (p<0.001).

Conclusion: There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of both nutritional habits and nutritional status. These findings highlight the need for tailored nutritional monitoring and interventions, particularly in individuals undergoing bariatric surgery.
