ANALYSIS OF SLEEP QUALITY ON ORAL INTAKE OF ICE SLURRY BEFORE BEDTIME IN TROPICAL NIGHT ENVIRONMENT

Rationale: Sleep disorders are a major social problem that prevails in modern society, and urgent action is required. Currently, many supplements are available in the commercial market that are supposed to improve the sleeping environment. However, the effect is extremely weak compared with that of the prescription. Ice slurry ingestion before exercise is based on evidence that reducing the initial core temperature allows for a greater heat storage capacity during exercise, which in turn prolongs the onset of hyperthermia-induced fatigue. Major previous sleep studies have observed a decrease in core body temperature from the time of falling asleep. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ice slurry intake before bedtime on sleep quality in the Japanese summer.
Methods: Eleven student volunteers, three male and eight female, participated in this study. The participants were performed to sleep intake ice slurry (100g/pack) or not as a control condition in theirown bedroom environment while wearing a sensor for sleep assessment and indoor climate environment recording. This experiment was performed from July to August during the hot and humid Japanese summer. The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of Jissen Women’s University.
Results: A total of 196 nights were recorded then acquisition successful 158 night’s sleep and indoor climate data were acquired. It was found that during sleep, the Japanese summer climate of 30 °C and 89% humidity in the bedroom was maintained. There was a significant difference in the non-REM sleep period between ice slurry and no ice slurry.
Conclusion: Consequently, deep sleep time tended to be longer when alcohol was ingested. Therefore, it was suggested that a decrease in core body temperature due to ice slurry consumption improves sleep quality.
