CHANGES IN CARDIOMETABOLIC DISORDERS IN USERS OF THE DIETARY DIARY APP, A MOBILE APPLICATION PROMOTING PRO-HEALTHY EATING HABITS

Rationale: Changes in markers of cardiometabolic disorders were analysed among users of a mobile Dietary Diary Application (DDApp) promoting pro-healthy eating habits after 10 weeks.
Methods: DDApp includes 11 food groups with defined nutritional goals: a recommended minimum or maximum servings per day or week. Users reported each serving consumed in the app. DDApp was tested for 10 weeks in 40 healthy and unhealthy individuals (18-67 years old) who did not require a therapeutic diet that conflicted with the app’s nutritional goals. Before and after 10 weeks of DDApp use, total cholesterol concentration (TChol) in capillary blood was determined, and measurements of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were taken. Diet quality was assessed using the KomPAN® questionnaire, and pro-Healthy Diet Index (pHDI) and non-Healthy Diet Index (nHDI) were calculated twice, respectively.
Results: During the 10 weeks, the number of nutritional goals achieved by users for not-so-healthy foods increased in total by 2.97, while nHDI decreased by 20.1% (p<0.01). After 10 weeks TChol decreased by 43.4 mg/dL (p<0.01), SBP by 8.5 mmHg (p<0.001), and DBP by 5.4 mmHg (p<0.001). The prevalence of high TChol (≥200 mg/dL) decreased by 90% (p<0.001), and high blood pressure (SBP≥140 mmHg or DBP≥90 mmHg) decreased by 67% (p<0.01).
Conclusion: The Dietary Diary app may help reduce cardiometabolic risk by motivating users to limit less healthy foods. DDApp can be use in individuals at ‘pre-disease’ stages and in those requiring pharmacological and dietetic treatment.
