ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECTS OF THE NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF CHILDREN TREATED FOR CANCER

Rationale: Cancers specific to children and adolescents are different from adults ones.Treatment typically lasts months and involves multi-drug chemotherapy, sometimes followed by radiotherapy or surgery in hospital settings.Patients receive nutritional care during therapy.The aim of this study was to assess the impact of selected factors on changes in nutritional status,as measured by percentile charts,in children undergoing oncological treatment.

Methods: Medical records of139children treated for cancer at the Dept.of Pediatrics,Hematology,and Oncology of University Hospital No.1 in Bydgoszcz(2021–2023)were analyzed.Nutritional status(weight percentile ranges)at diagnosis and at treatment completion was assessed by gender,age,treatment duration,ICU stays,bone marrow transplantation,and nutritional interventions.Patients aged0-5were assessed using WHO centile ranges;those aged5-17with IMCH ranges.Changes in centile ranges during treatment were compared to the body weight centile range before,during,after treatment.Statistical analysis included chi-square,Mann-Whitney,Kruskal-Wallis tests.

Results: No statistically significant changes in body weight were found before and after treatment.However,treatment duration,bone marrow transplantation,surgical intervention,and parenteral nutrition significantly affected nutritional status.Detailed results are shown in the table.

Conclusion: No negative impact on nutritional status of children and adolescents was observed at the start or end of treatment,but changes occurred during treatment.These changes depended on criteria other than chemotherapy and treatment methods(bone marrow transplantation,initial management).Parenteral nutrition was required in various treatment modalities by54%of children.Statistically significant differences in body weight were also demonstrated in these children,which indirectly indicates the need for dietary and nutritional support during treatment.
