Rationale: Elective neurosurgeries can lead to complications that impact food intake and impair nutritional status. Early identification of nutritional risk and individualized nutritional intervention help reduce these complications, costs, and length of stay1,2,3. This study aimed to identify and characterize the nutritional risk of patients in the postoperative period of elective neurosurgeries.
Methods: A retrospective study analyzed adults ICU immediate postoperative patients at a private hospital, during 1 year period, excluding those with neurological deficits affecting feeding.Nutritional risk was assessed by NRS-2002 within 24 hours of admission, categorized by surgery type.
Results: 130 patients,mostly men(57.7%),with a mean age of 51±13.8 years.Most underwent frontal,parietal,or temporal craniotomies(64.6%),followed by transnasal surgeries(16.9%).11 patients(8.5%) had nutritional risk,10 underwent craniotomies.9 patients at risk were discharged before 6 days.
Conclusion: The results seem to support that nutritional risk assessed by NRS is less prevalent in adult patients undergoing elective neurosurgery and support the existing literature that associates nutritional risk and length of hospital stay.
