ASSOCIATION BETWEEN INTUITIVE EATING, MINDFUL EATING AND PREMENSTRUAL AND MENSTRUAL SYMPTOM SEVERITY IN ADULT WOMEN: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Rationale: Premenstrual and menstrual symptoms are common problems that affect women’s health in various ways. These symptoms may relate not only to hormonal changes, but also to nutrient intake, dietary patterns, and eating behaviors (1,2). There are limited studies in the literature examining intuitive eating and mindful eating in relation to these symptoms. This study aims to evaluate the combined effect of intuitive and mindfulness-based eating on premenstrual and menstrual symptoms in adult women.
Methods: Six hundred women aged 19–45 with a menstrual cycle were included in this study. Intuitive eating, mindful eating, premenstrual and menstrual symptoms were evaluated using the Intuitive Eating Scale (IES-2), Mindful Eating Scale (MES-30), Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS), and Menstrual Symptoms Questionnaire (MSQ), respectively.
Results: PMS was diagnosed in 57.5% of women. Women without PMS had higher IES-2 and MES-30 scores. The PMS group had a higher MSQ score (p<0.001). IES-2 and MES-30 scores negatively correlated with both premenstrual and menstrual symptoms (p<0.05). Regression analysis showed eating awareness, age, and menstrual cycle length predicted premenstrual symptom severity; eating awareness and age also predicted menstrual symptom severity (p<0.05).

Conclusion: These findings suggest that the decrease in intuitive and mindful eating during the PMS period is associated with lower self-awareness and poor management of eating behaviors, and that raising awareness of these approaches may support symptom management.
