Rationale: This study aims to monitor body weight variations in patients with prostate cancer treated with radio-hormonal therapy.
Methods: This prospective study included 60 patients with prostate cancer undergoing external beam radiotherapy over a three-month period, from October to December 2024, at the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat.
A weekly consultation was scheduled throughout the treatment period to detect acute radiotherapy toxicities, during which regular body weight monitoring was performed.
Results: The age of the patients ranged from 65 to 85 years, with a median age of 75 years. All patients were treated with external beam radiotherapy using the VMAT technique at a total dose of 76 Gy.
The reported acute side effects included diarrhea in 28.57% of cases, tenesmus in 24.28% of patients, anal pain in 18.67% of patients, and radiation proctitis in 10.1% of cases.
At the beginning of treatment, patients’ weight ranged from 64 to 83 kg, corresponding to a BMI between 18.5 and 27.
At the end of treatment (after a fractionation period of 46 to 58 days), weight loss of more than 5% of body weight was observed in 29 patients (48.33%), less than 5% in 21 patients (35%), while 10 patients (16.66%) maintained a stable weight.
We observed that all patients who experienced weight loss of more than 5% had at least two acute side effects combined with a strict dietary regimen.
Conclusion: The management of toxicities in patients with prostate cancers should be initiated early, ideally preventively, before any treatment to avoid deterioration in quality of life and reduced efficacy and tolerance of oncologic treatments.
