Rationale: Obesity management requires strategies addressing both diet and behavioural adherence. This pilot randomized controlled trial examined the effects of a 12-week low-glycaemic index (LGI) hypocaloric diet with or without a behavioural change intervention based on the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) on anthropometric, cardiovascular, and quality of life outcomes in overweight/obese women.
Methods: Twenty women (BMI: 31.0 ± 3.6 kg/m2; age: 41.8 ± 6.6 years) were randomized to an Intervention Group (IG; LGI diet + TTM-based sessions every two weeks) or a Control Group (CG; LGI diet alone) for 12 weeks. Primary outcomes included body weight, BMI, body circumferences, blood pressure, and quality of life (SF-12). Data were analysed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA (p < 0.05). The study protocol was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the University of Thessaly.
Results: An LGI hypocaloric diet effectively promotes weight loss, while adding TTM-based behavioural support provides further benefits in blood pressure and mental well-being. These findings suggest behavioural interventions may enhance clinical outcomes in obesity management, although larger studies are needed to confirm these results.
Conclusion: An LGI hypocaloric diet effectively promotes weight loss, while adding TTM-based behavioural support provides further benefits in blood pressure and mental well-being. These findings suggest behavioural interventions may enhance clinical outcomes in obesity management, although larger studies are needed to confirm these results.
