POTENTIAL OF DIETARY POLYPHENOLS IN PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF TYPE 2 DIABETES, OBESITY AND DEPRESSION

Rationale: Type 2 diabetes, obesity and depression are widespread diseases and there is relationship between them, where each disorder impacts the course and outcomes of the others. Besides drugs the use of dietary polyphenols has been shown to be a promising alternative in the fight against these diseases. The primary mechanisms include reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, reducing blood sugar and protein glycation, improving insulin resistance and modulating the microbiota-gut-brain axis and hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Methods: To estimate the role of dietary polyphenols, we observed 50 patients with type 2 diabetes, obesity and depression who consumed polyphenols-rich foods between 1 December 2023 and 1 December 2024. In this period observed patients took their antidiabetic drugs. The patients had poor glycemic control with HbA1c above 8.0%, serum fasting blood glucose (FBG) above 8 mmol/l and fasting insulin above 14 mU/l, BMI above 30, HOMA-IR above 5. In addition they had the major symptoms of depression like lack of pleasure, insomnia, poor concentration, changes in appetite, chronic pain and inflammation, feeling anxious, low energy, weak immune system.

Results: For one year of dietary polyphenols intake in the observed group we have found significant reduction of HbA1c to below 7.0%, improvement of serum FBG and fasting insulin. In addition we have found 10% weight reduction and reduce of HOMA-IR in the patients. Moreover we have found positive effects of polyphenols on improving the symptoms of depression.

Conclusion: Dietary polyphenols can significantly reduce HbA1c, serum FBG, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR and BMI. Furthermore they can improve typical symptoms of depression. Our study suggests that dietary polyphenols can be recommended as complementary treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes, obesity and depression.
