Rationale: Obesity is a leading risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, necessitating effective interventions. This study aimed to assess the impact of a comprehensive lifestyle intervention, including medical nutrition therapy (MNT), on weight management and metabolic health in obese patients receiving treatment in an internal medicine clinic.
Methods: A total of 150 patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m² were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial. Participants were assigned to either a control group, receiving standard care, or an intervention group, which participated in a 12-week program incorporating MNT, physical activity guidance, and behavioral counseling. Baseline and follow-up data on weight, BMI, waist circumference, and metabolic markers such as fasting glucose and lipid profiles were collected.
Results: Participants in the intervention group experienced a significant reduction in BMI (mean decrease of 3.8 kg/m², p < 0.001) and waist circumference (mean decrease of 5.2 cm, p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Additionally, the MNT group showed significant improvements in metabolic markers, including a mean reduction in fasting glucose (1.5 mg/dL, p < 0.01) and total cholesterol levels (10 mg/dL, p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The findings suggest that a structured lifestyle intervention, incorporating medical nutrition therapy, is effective in promoting weight loss and improving metabolic health among obese patients in internal medicine settings. These results underline the importance of MNT as a crucial component of clinical weight management strategies.
