MORPHOFUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT IN ONCOLOGY PATIENTS IN DAY HOSPITAL: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO NUTRITIONAL STATUS

Rationale: Disease-related malnutrition in oncohematological patients represents a relevant clinical challenge, given its high prevalence and its association with poorer therapeutic outcomes. Traditional assessment based on parameters such as body weight, body mass index (BMI), or anthropometry has limitations in detecting early changes in body composition and functionality. In this context, techniques such as bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), handgrip strength dynamometry (HGS), and nutritional ultrasound® emerge as key tools within morphofunctional assessment (MFA) for a more precise and individualized approach.
Methods: A prospective study in oncohematological patients starting first-line treatment collected anthropometric, clinical, and functional data using BIA, handgrip strength, and nutritional ultrasound. Malnutrition was diagnosed according to GLIM criteria, and differences between malnourished and non-malnourished patients were analyzed.
Results: 150 patients (56% women, mean age 62.4 years) were included, mainly with lymphomas and leukemias. Despite a normal mean BMI, 54.7% had malnutrition and 15.4% were at risk of sarcopenia. Malnourished patients showed significantly lower PhA, muscle mass (RF-CSA), and strength (HGS) (p<0.01), with no differences by tumor type.
Conclusion: The incorporation of morphofunctional assessment allows for a more precise characterization of nutritional status by integrating body composition and muscle function parameters. Its systematic use in oncological clinical practice may facilitate early, tailored, and effective nutritional intervention in patients at risk of malnutrition.
