EFFICACY OF LIRAGLUTIDE ON WEIGHT CONTROL IN ADOLESCENTS WITH OBESITY AND CONCOMITANT ANTIPSYCHOTIC MEDICATION USE: A 12-MONTH LONGITUDINAL STUDY.

Rationale: Weight management in the adolescent population is particularly challenging when obesity is exacerbated by antipsychotic medication, known to induce weight gain. This study evaluates the 12-month efficacy of Liraglutide in weight loss and body composition, specifically assessing its capacity to counteract medication-induced weight gain.
Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted involving 20 adolescents treated with Liraglutide (10 receiving antipsychotic medication, mean age 14.4 ±2.5 and 10 without medication, mean age 15.7 ±2.7). Anthropometric measures: Body mas index (BMI) and BMI Z score; and body composition with bioelectrical impedance analisis; were measured at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. Statistical analysis was performed using the Friedman Test.
Results: Significant reductions were observed in the with and without antipsychotic medication group for BMI, BMI Z-score, body fat mass, percent body mass and visceral fat level (p<0.001).

Skeletal muscle mass remained stable in both groups throughout the study period (p > 0.05), despite substantial weight reduction. Multiple comparisons revealed that the most significant weight changes occurred between the 6th and the 12th months.
Conclusion: Liraglutide is an effective treatment option for managing adolescent obesity, regardless of concomitant antipsychotic medication. According to this study, adolescents who are being treated with antipsychotic medication, also lost weight significantly, so therefore can safely benefit from treatment with Liraglutide.
