ACCEPTABILITY OF THE POWER TRIAL: ORAL NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT AND ONLINE RESISTANCE TRAINING FOR OLDER ADULTS WITH SARCOPENIA

Rationale: Adherence is key to the effectiveness of an intervention; hence, if an intervention is deemed acceptable, adherence is positively impacted.  This study evaluated the acceptability of a nutrition [oral nutritional supplement (ONS)] and online resistance training (RT) intervention for older adults at risk of sarcopenia.  Facilitators and barriers to both components of the intervention were identified.

Methods: Older adults (n=39, ≥70 years) at risk of sarcopenia (SARC-F ≥1) and receiving home care who completed the randomized, controlled POWER trial (i) ONS + RT: ONS x2/day and twice/week online RT (n=19) or (ii) RT: twice/week online RT only (n=20) were included.  Program acceptability was evaluated post-intervention (T2) via questionnaires.  ONS acceptability to participants allocated to the ONS + RT group (n=19) was assessed using 9-point and 5-point hedonic ratings.  Acceptability of the online RT to all 39 POWER trial participants was assessed using a 5-point Likert scale.  Unprompted feedback on both intervention components was also captured.  Hedonic and Likert scale data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.  Thematic analysis was undertaken on the qualitative feedback data.

Results: Both the ONS and online RT program were positively rated for acceptability.  Provision of preferred ONS flavor(s) and integration into daily routine facilitated acceptability, while barriers included poor texture and taste fatigue.  Facilitators for the online RT included instructor clarity and encouragement, class structure and use of Zoom, and perceived physical benefits.  Barriers included challenges using the cuff weights and requiring assistance with the online platform, Zoom.

Conclusion: An ONS and online RT program was acceptable to older adults at risk of sarcopenia receiving homecare.
