Rationale: Malnutrition in low-resource settings is driven by the convergence of structural poverty, food insecurity, and inadequate sanitation. Turiaçu, located on the Brazilian Amazon coast, exemplifies this syndemic context with a low Human Development Index (0.561), reflecting entrenched social inequities.
Methods: This ecological analysis integrates secondary data from national demographic and sanitation systems (IBGE 2022; SNIS 2023) with Brazilian food security surveys to examine the intersection between environmental deprivation and nutritional risk.
Results: Reated water coverage (26.4%), sewage (0.3%), waste collection (31.7%). Poor sanitation and food insecurity likely amplify enteric infections and environmental enteric dysfunction, perpetuating undernutrition. Exploratory analysis aligns households without treated water with high child undernutrition risk.
Conclusion: Sanitation inequities and food insecurity co-produce nutritional vulnerability in Turiaçu. Integrated interventions targeting water, sanitation, and food access are critical in similar high-risk populations.
