EVALUATION OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET ADHERENCE, APPETITE, AND MALNUTRITION STATUS IN ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE (COPD)

Rationale: This study was conducted to evaluate Mediterranean diet adherence, appetite, and malnutrition status in elderly patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). 

Methods: The study sample consisted of 200 elderly patients diagnosed with COPD who applied to the Chest Diseases Outpatient Clinic of Antalya Training and Research Hospital. Patients' appetite status was assessed using the Simple Appetite Assessment Questionnaire (SNAQ), while their adherence to the Mediterranean diet was determined using the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale (MEDAS). Malnutrition was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) tool. Statistical analysis of the obtained data was performed using the SPSS program.

Results: A total of 200 elderly COPD patients with an average age of 74.7 ± 6.03 years were included in the study; 101 of the patients were women and 99 were men. According to the MEDAS (Mediterranean Diet Adherence Scale) scores, 61.5% of individuals showed low adherence and 38.5% showed moderate adherence; there was no statistically significant difference in this distribution between women and men (X²=0.703; p=0.402). According to the SNAQ classification, 96.0% of women and 94.1% of men are at risk of loss of appetite, and there is no statistically significant difference between genders (X² = 0.380; p = 0.538). According to the malnutrition classification, the vast majority of participants (97%) were malnourished, and 3% were found to be at risk of malnutrition.

Conclusion: It was found that elderly COPD patients have a high risk of loss of appetite and malnutrition, and low adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Routine screening of malnutrition status and diet quality is important for improving the nutritional status of patients.
