Rationale: Oncology patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) express a need for personalized, uniform and evidence-based nutritional information (1), to help them navigate the overwhelming and often conflicting information available. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a feasible way to provide oncology patients with appropriate nutritional information.
Methods: This design-based research used the Double Diamond Model. HCPs and patients were actively involved in the discover, define and develop phase. Brainstorm and test sessions conducted within clinical practice provided qualitative data that iteratively refined both the content of the nutritional information and the practical usability of the design.
Results: A prototype of an AI-driven chatbot was developed to support HCPs in providing uniform, evidence-based nutrtitional guidance, built on validated sources. The tool offers advice on nutrition-related symptoms, suggests meals tailored to calorie and protein needs, and provides information on nutritional supplements and herbal products during cancer treatment. Follow-up questions enable the chatbot to generate personalized advise based on individual needs.
Conclusion: The developed prototype of an AI-driven chatbot safely employs artificial intelligence to efficiently provide appropriate nutritional information in oncology care. Successful implementation may enhance patients' nutritional management and contribute to their physical condition and quality of life.
