THE EFFECT OF EMOTIONAL STATUS ON DIETARY INTAKE IN ADULTS WITH FAMILIAL MEDITERRANEAN FEVER

Rationale: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a hereditary autoinflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent inflammatory attacks and periodic fever. Patients with FMF may also experience emotional disturbances such as anxiety and depression, which can influence lifestyle behaviors, including dietary habits. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of emotional status on dietary intake in adults with FMF.
Methods: Sixty-two adults (aged ≥18 years) who were followed in the rheumatology outpatient clinic of a university hospital were included. Emotional status was assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and dietary intake was evaluated using a three-day food record.
Results: Thirty-one participants had depression (HADS-Depression scores ≥7), and 27 participants had anxiety (HADS-Anxiety scores ≥10). Participants with depression had significantly lower intakes of protein, total fat, saturated fat, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, zinc, and phosphorus (Table, p<0.05). Similarly, participants with anxiety had lower dietary intakes, however, this difference was not statistically significant (Table, p>0.05).

Conclusion: Based on our results, depression has a clear negative effect on dietary intake. Similarly, anxiety seems to have a detrimental effect on dietary intake, however, this should be confirmed in future larger studies. Nevertheless, emotional status needs to be considered while planning nutritional management in this population.
