THE ASSOCIATION OF EATING BEHAVIOR WITH METABOLIC AND BIOCHEMICAL INDICATORS IN ADULTS WITH AND WITHOUT DIABETES

Rationale: Eating behavior plays a key role in metabolism. This study compared TFEQ-assessed patterns between individuals with and without diagnosed diabetes and examined their associations with metabolic indicators by sex.

Methods: A cross-sectional study included 660 adults (269 with diabetes, 391 healthy). TFEQ subscales were compared using t-tests, and Pearson correlations were performed by sex and diabetes status.

Results: TFEQ scores did not differ significantly by diabetes status (p>0.05). In diabetic men, emotional eating was correlated with fasting glucose (r=0.204;p=0.046), triglycerides (r=0.313;p=0.002), HDL (r=–0.203;p=0.047), BMI (r=0.249;p=0.014), waist circumference (r=0.223;p=0.029), and body weight (r=0.230;p=0.024). In diabetic women, emotional eating was correlated with BMI (r=0.217;p=0.004), and weight (r=0.265;p<0.001). Among non-diabetic women and men, eating behaviors was not significantly associated with biochemical parameters; however, specially emotional eating remained consistently correlated with anthropometric measures.

Conclusion: Emotional eating is associated with metabolic indicators across all individuals and shows additional biochemical links in diabetes, highlighting its clinical relevance.
