NUTRITIONAL QUALITY AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH ADDICTION SEVERITY IN INDIVIDUALS WITH SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS RECEIVING TREATMENT

Rationale: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are frequently associated with poor dietary habits, which may result in inadequate nutrient intake and impaired nutritional status. Although previous studies have reported improvements in metabolic and anthropometric parameters during addiction treatment, limited research has investigated dietary intake and nutritional quality in relation to addiction severity

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 53 individuals hospitalized in an Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Centre (AMATEM). Sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters, and dietary intake data were collected. Dietary intake was assessed using dietary records and analysed with the Nutrition Information System (BEBİS). Nutritional quality was evaluated using the Mean Adequacy Ratio (MAR), calculated from nutrient adequacy ratios according to the Turkish Dietary Guidelines (TUBER). Addiction severity was assessed using the Addiction Profile Index (API).

Results: The median age of the participants was 27 years (range: 25–34). According to API scores, 30.19% of participants had high addiction severity, while 13.2% required dietary improvement based on MAR values. Energy and dietary fibre intake were insufficient in 90.6% of participants, and 43.4% had inadequate protein intake. Based on TUBER recommendations, all participants had insufficient intake of vitamins A, E, B1, B2, B6, and C, as well as vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, and water. Participants with better nutritional quality demonstrated significantly higher motivation scores in the API subscale (p = 0.035).

Conclusion:  Better diet quality was associated with higher motivation levels, highlighting the potential importance of nutritional assessment and dietary support as complementary components of addiction treatment programs in AMATEM settings.
