Rationale: Pre– and post–surgery recovery treatments include multiple interventions including oral nutritional supplementation. The main objective was to evaluate the regular consumption of a hypercaloric and hyperproteic reconstituted omega–3–enriched powdered nutritional formula (NF) effect on adherence, acceptability and tolerance in patients with colorectal cancer.

Methods: A prospective clinical study was performed on adult patients undergoing scheduled colorectal surgery and with malnutrition risk (MUST ≥1). All patients had 2 weeks of nutritional prehabilitation prior to surgery (PreS) where they consumed 1–2 NF based on their nutritional requirements. Post-surgery, patients consumed NF for an additional 30 days (PostS). Adherence, acceptability (visual analogue scale) and tolerance were assessed from baseline to end of each phase intervention.

Results: Twenty-two patients with adenocarcinoma (54.5% males) completed the study (64.1±12.7 years). One NF was the most commonly prescribed (90.9%). Adherence to nutritional treatment was adequate in PreS (98.7±3.7%) and PostS (93.4±9.6%). The overall acceptability score was 80.5/82.3 points (PreS/PostS), and the highest-rated scale was the product effectiveness (96/97 points). Tolerance was adequate for both treatment phases, and none of the patients reported diarrhea, heartburn, or bad breath related to NF consumption. The presence of symptoms such as nausea (from 9.9% to 0%) or bloating (from 4.5% to 0%) improved from PreS to PostS.

Conclusion: The regular consumption of a hypercaloric and hyperproteic omega-3-enriched powdered nutritional formula (FontActiv Support, GrandFontaine) had an adequate tolerability, acceptability, and adherence in pre- and post-surgery. Therefore, its consumption could be considered as an alternative to the nutritional treatment in patients with colorectal cancer and malnutrition risk.
