Rationale: This study aims to investigate the relationship between dietary phytochemical index (DPI) and some biochemical markers, depression, and anxiety in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 119 individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged between 18 and 65 years. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire and DPI was calculated based on weight units. The researchers measured the participants' anthropometric measurements. Biochemical data including fasting blood glucose and lipid profile were collected from medical records. Psychological status was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI).
Results: It was observed that some metabolic markers (glucose, lipid profile, cholesterol, CRP, etc.) levels were lower in individuals with high DPI, and there was also a significant inverse relationship between them and depression and anxiety scores (p<0.05). Significant inverse relationships were found between DPI scores and waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip ratio (p<0.05). A significant inverse relationship was found between DPI (g) scores and the frequency of retinopathy and nephropathy, and increased phytochemical intake decreased the likelihood of these complications (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It has been determined that a nutritional model rich in phytochemicals provides an improvement in some anthropometric measurements and biochemical parameters, furthermore reducing the risk of complications, depression, and anxiety levels.
