DO FSMP MEET THE MICRONUTRIENT NEEDS OF ONCOLOGY PATIENTS? FOCUS ON ESSENTIAL TRACE ELEMENTS

Rationale: Food for Special Medical Purpose (FSMP) are essential in the nutritional management of oncology patients; however, data on their actual trace element content are limited, raising concerns about safety and regulatory compliance.

Methods: Twenty-three FSMP products (oral and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)) were obtained from Polish pharmacies. Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were analyzed using ICP-MS (Shimadzu ICP-2030) after microwave-assisted digestion with HNO₃/H₂O₂. Results were expressed per 100 g/mL, per serving, and as estimated daily intake, and compared with European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reference values.

Results: Discrepancies between declared and measured values were found in all products. Cu exceeded declared levels in 74% of samples, while Zn was lower in 91%. Cu intake surpassed EFSA ADI in six PEG products (up to 161%). Fe from PEG FSMP exceeded RDA by >200% in five products. Mean Mn reached 125.7% AI, with PEG products averaging 212%.

Conclusion: Despite these inconsistencies, no product posed an immediate health risk. The findings highlight the need for standardized analytical monitoring and stricter regulatory oversight of FSMP, which should be treated with pharmaceutical-grade rigor, especially in vulnerable oncology patients.
