PLANETARY HEALTH DIET, WEIGHT STATUS, AND SLEEP QUALITY IN SOUTHERN ITALIAN ADULTS

Rationale: Over the last few years, environmentally friendly dietary patterns have been the focus of major attention. However, studies applying modeled scores to actual dietary habits and exploring their association with health outcomes are scarce. The aim of this studyas to investigate the relationship between adoption of an environmentally friendly diet, weight status, and sleep quality in adults living in southern Italy. 

Methods: A total of 1,936 individuals completed a 110-item food frequency questionnaire to estimate dietary intake. The Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) was used to assess the environmental impact of dietary habits. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between level of adherence to the PHD and the outcomes of interest.

Results: After adjustment for potential confounding factors, 1-point increase in the PHDI score was associated with a lower likelihood of being overweight or obese (OR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.98-0.99). A linear inverse association was found between PHDI scores and waist and hip circumferences and, partially, with BMI, but not with body weight was found. Individuals reporting higher adherence to the PHD were more likely to have adequate sleep quality (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.28). Among the individual components of sleep quality, higher PHDI scores were inversely associated with sleep disturbances and poor self-perceived sleep quality. Interestingly, the retrieved associations were stronger when considering overweight and individuals with obesity, while no associations were found among normal-weight participants. 

Conclusion: Higher adherence to an environmentally friendly dietary pattern may be associated with better sleep quality; such an association may be mediated by better weight status.
