IS THE INFLAMMATORY POTENTIAL OF DIET ASSOCIATED WITH BODY FAT PERCENTAGE IN ADOLESCENTS?

Rationale: The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) is a tool used to assess the inflammatory potential of diet. However, evidence regarding the relationship between DII and body composition in adolescents remains limited and inconsistent. 

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 386 adolescents aged 12–16 years (189 boys and 197 girls). Sociodemographic characteristics, dietary habits, anthropometric measurements, DII scores, and physical activity levels were assessed. Nutrient intake adequacy was evaluated according to the Turkey Dietary Guidelines (TÜBER). DII scores were calculated from dietary intake records, and participants were classified into anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory dietary profiles and further categorized into DII tertiles. Body Mass Index (BMI) Z-scores were classified using WHO Anthro Plus standards. Physical activity levels were assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C).

Results: The mean age of the adolescents was 13.5 ± 1.2 years. According to BMI Z-score classification, 18.0% of boys and 7.6% of girls were obese. In both sexes, intakes of riboflavin, folic acid, calcium, vitamin D, and selenium were inadequate. Overall, 81.1% of participants had a pro-inflammatory diet. No significant differences were observed between DII tertiles in terms of anthropometric measurements or physical activity levels (p>0.05). However, DII scores were positively associated with body fat percentage (B=0.410; 95% CI: 0.232–0.589; p<0.001), while physical activity scores were negatively associated with body fat percentage (B=−1.562; 95% CI: −2.642 to −0.481; p=0.005).

Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that increased body fat percentage and insufficient physical activity in adolescents are associated with a pro-inflammatory dietary profile.
