OBESOGENIC ENVIRONMENT EXPOSURE IN INDIVIDUALS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES: ASSOCIATION WITH ANTHROPOMETRIC AND METABOLIC INDICATORS

Rationale: The obesogenic environment impedes healthy lifestyle choices by both facilitating access to energy-dense foods and restricting opportunities for physical activity. The impact of this environmental exposure on anthropometric and metabolic parameters is of critical importance for clinical management, particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 380 volunteers (n=380) residing throughout Türkiye, aged 18-65 years, who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least six months. Data were collected using the Assessment of Obesogenic Environment in Adults, along with a questionnaire covering anthropometric and metabolic control indicators. The association between variables was evaluated using Spearman's rho correlation analysis via SPSS 22.0 (p<0.05).

Results: Of the participants, 86.3% were overweight or obese; a vast majority were found to be at high metabolic risk in terms of waist circumference (93.4%) and waist-to-hip ratio (88.7%). Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant negative association between obesogenic environment scores and HDL cholesterol (ρ=-0.169; p<0.01). Significant positive correlations were found with fasting blood glucose (FBG) (ρ=0.113), LDL cholesterol (ρ=0.112), and triglycerides (ρ=0.131) (p<0.05). No significant associations were observed with Body Mass Index (BMI), HbA1c, or total cholesterol (p>0.05).

Conclusion: An obesogenic environment is associated with lipid profiles and glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes, independent of BMI. Environmental interventions play a critical role in metabolic management.
