BODY COMPOSITION, DIETARY INTAKE, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND FUNCTIONAL STATUS IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS WITH AND WITHOUT COEXISTING COPD: A PILOT STUDY

Rationale: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) frequently coexist and may negatively affect metabolic, nutritional and clinical outcomes (1). This study compared body composition, dietary intake, physical activity, and functional status between patients with T2DM alone and those with coexisting T2DM and COPD.
Methods: The study included 37 patients divided into T2DM alone (n=24; 17 males, 7 females) and T2DM with COPD (n=13; all male), with a mean age of 69.3±7.8 years and a mean BMI of 29.3±3.7 kg/m². Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance, dietary intake by the Food Frequency Questionnaire, physical activity by accelerometry, and functional status by the Short Physical Performance Battery. Between-group comparisons were performed, with statistical significance set at p<0.05.
Results: No significant between-group differences were found in dietary intake, physical activity, or functional status. Visceral fat was significantly higher in the T2DM and COPD group compared to T2DM alone (4.7±1.4 L vs 3.6±1.5 L; p=0.023). Groups differed in sex distribution (p=0.033).
Conclusion: Coexisting COPD in T2DM patients was associated with higher visceral fat despite otherwise similar nutritional, functional and activity outcomes. However, between-group differences in sex distribution may have contributed to this finding. These exploratory results suggest that visceral adiposity and sex should be considered in the nutritional assessment of this population and highlight the need for larger and sex-balanced studies.
