THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DIETARY PHYTOCHEMICAL INTAKE AND CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IN WOMEN

Rationale: This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary phytochemical index and circadian rhythm in women with different body mass index categories.

Methods: The study was conducted with 180 volunteer women between June and December 2023. Dietary phytochemical intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire, and circadian rhythm was evaluated with the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) through face-to-face interviews. Participants were grouped by body mass index (BMI), and dietary phytochemical index (DPI) tertiles were calculated.

Results: Energy carbohydrate, protein, fat, fiber, sucrose, cholesterol, and fatty acid intakes were significantly higher in overweight and obese participants compared to normal-weight individuals (p<0.05). The mean DPI was higher in overweight and obese participants than in normal-weight individuals (38.54±10.89 vs. 35.06±10.84; p=0.016). Nutrient intakes differed significantly across DPI tertiles (p<0.05). MEQ scores did not differ significantly between groups (p=0.103), and the majority of participants in both groups were classified as intermediate chronotype (p=0.104). In conclusion, although dietary phytochemical intake was higher in overweight and obese individuals, no significant association was found between DPI and circadian rhythm (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Overweight and obese women had higher dietary phytochemical intake compared to normal-weight individuals; however, no significant association was found between dietary phytochemical index and circadian rhythm. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between dietary quality and circadian patterns.
