Rationale: Identifying eating behavior phenotypes is crucial for personalized obesity treatment. This study aimed to analyze the results of Anger-Katz Eating Behavior Factors Scale (EBFS) by age group and gender.
Methods: Cross-sectional study, 100 adolescent and young adult patients using EBFS (1), measures five subphenotypes: emotional, hyperphagic, hedonic, disorganized, and compulsive eating. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed, including Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Fisher’s Exact Test, and Pearson/Kendall's correlation. Associations were quantified using Odds Ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals. Data analyzed using STATA v.16.1®.
Results: 100 participants, 50 adolescents and 50 young adults, average age was 15.5 years for adolescents and 21.7 years for young adults.Young adults had significantly higher emotional scores compared to adolescents (14.3 vs. 13.0 p=0.04). Hedonic domain showed high scores in both groups, 90.0% adolescents and 94.0% young adults scoring high or very high, with no significant differences (OR: 1.75; 95% CI: 0.39-7.7). Moderate correlations between emotional and hyperphagic (r=0.54, p<0.001), hedonic (r=0.54, p<0.001), weaker correlations with compulsive (r=0.43, p=0.001). The hyperphagic had correlation with hedonic (r=0.93, p<0.001) and moderate with compulsive (r=0.54, p<0.001). Disorganized phenotype did not correlate with any other.
Conclusion: No significant differences in phenotypes between adolescents and young adults, except for emotional behavior, (higher in young adults). The hedonic phenotype had the highest scores and frequencies in both groups. These findings emphasize the importance of phenotype diagnosis to guide both psychotherapy and pharmacological interventions.
