ASSOCIATION OF DIETARY FATTY ACIDS WITH OXIDATIVE STRESS AMONG LATVIAN PREGNANT WOMEN

Rationale: Oxidative stress is associated with pregnancy complications, including recurrent miscarriage, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, congenital anomalies, and fetal death. Adequate, nutrient-rich, and balanced maternal nutrition may help reduce oxidative stress and support optimal fetal development. Fatty acids (FAs) play a key role in physiological processes and overall health. This study aimed to evaluate the association between dietary FAs and oxidative stress in pregnant women in Latvia and to analyze their correlations.

Methods: Quantitative cross-sectional study of 74 healthy pregnant women in the 27th - 40th week of gestation and postpartum women up to the 7th day after delivery. Data collection was based on a dietary frequency questionnaire and a survey on health and demographic data. To evaluate level of oxidative stress selenoprotein P (SelP), malondialdehyde (MDA), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were detected.

Results: Dietary fat accounted for 42% of total energy intake, of which 6.8% was derived from saturated fatty acids (SFAs). The median (Q1-Q3) of dietary SFAs – 16.7 (12.0-23.0) g, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) – 53.3 (40.0-68.5) g and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) – 16.7 (12.0-21.1) g. Dominating dietary FA was 18:1, n-9. Medians (Q1-Q3) for oxidative stress parameters were 10.2 (7.9-14.1) mg/l, 4.0 (2.7-5.3) mmol/L, 0.7 (0.6-0.8) Fe2+ mmol/L and 7.1 (5.9-8.1) U/mL for SelP, MDA, FRAP and GPx, respectively. Plasma MDA negatively correlated with dietary 12:0 (r=-0.247, p<0.05), 22:1, n-9 (r=-0.241, p<0.05) and 8:0 (r=-0.240, p<0.05). Dietary 22:0 positively correlated with plasma SelP (r=0.249, p<0.05).

Conclusion: There are indications dietary FAs could affect parameters of oxidative stress. Additional potential confounding factors should be considered.
