Rationale: Emotional eating is defined as the act of eating in response to negative emotions without the presence of physical hunger. An increase in energy and macronutrient intake due to emotional eating can lead to an increased risk of obesity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between emotional eating and nutritional status in obese individuals.
Methods: This study was conducted on 197 obese individuals (57 men and 140 women) aged between 18-65 years. Body weight and height measurements were taken by the researcher, and body mass index was calculated to identify obesity in individuals. Emotional eating status of the participants was determined using the Emotional Eater Questionnaire. To assess nutritional status, a 24-hour dietary recall was used to record food consumption.
Results: 75.4% of men and 72.9% of women were identified as emotional eaters. The difference in emotional eating between genders was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). As the total score of the emotional eating scale increased, the daily average intake of total energy (r: -0.106, p: 0.137), carbohydrates (r: -0.113, p: 0.112), protein (r: -0.006, p: 0.932), and fat (r: -0.083, p: 0.248) decreased. However, the relationship was not statistically significant (p>0.05).
Conclusion: The majority of both men and women were identified as emotional eaters, and emotional eating status showed a statistically significant difference between genders. No significant relationship was found between emotional eating scores and daily average energy, protein, fat, and carbohydrate intake.
