Rationale: Vitiligo, a skin disorder with global prevalence ~1%, involves melanin loss and is linked to hormonal, genetic and dietary factors. This study assesses dietary vitamin C and E intake in vitiligo patients, exploring potential nutritional associations despite unclear mechanistic roles in immune-mediated pathogenesis.
Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional study analyzed 263 vitiligo patients among Iranian population, assessing dietary intake via a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Vitamin C and E consumption levels were calculated using a Nutritionist IV software.
Results: Based on this cross-sectional survey, vitiligo patients showed a mean vitamin E intake of 3.79±1.80 mg/day, which is significantly lower than the RDA value (15 mg/day), indicating deficiency. Conversely, their average vitamin C consumption (130.70 ± 84.00 mg/day) exceeded the RDA (90 mg/day).
Conclusion: In conclusion vitiligo patients often exceed vitamin C recommendations due to higher intake of fruits/vegetables containing vitamin C, while lower vitamin E intake might be caused from limited consumption of nuts/seeds/oils, economic constraints, and dietary habits of Iranian.
