EVALUATION OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS, INFLAMMATION AND FLUID OVERLOAD IN CKD PATIENTS UNDERGOING HAEMODIALYSIS.

Rationale: Malnutrition, Fluid overload and inflammation exist in patients with haemodialysis, resulting in poor clinical outcomes. Understanding their triad interrelationship is essential for improving patient clinical outcomes(1).
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 150 haemodialysis patients. Nutritional status was assessed using Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, Body composition analysis included total body water (TBW), intracellular water (ICW), extracellular water to total body water ratio (ECW/TBW), phase angle (PA), percent body fat (PBF), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and protein levels using a body water analyser. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS version 24.0.
Results: Statistical analysis revealed prevalence of low muscle mass of 82.7% and 94.7% had higher body fat. As per GLIM criteria 87.3% and 12.3% had Stage 1 and stage 2 malnutrition whereas, SGA score was 16.9 indicating as moderately malnourished. The mean ECW/TBW ratio was 0.400 ± 0.020, with 74.0% of patients exhibiting fluid overload. The mean PA was 4.86 ± 1.36°, with 27.3% of patients showing low PA, which negatively correlated with SGA-based nutritional status (r = −0.218, p = 0.007).
Conclusion: Combining BIA with SGA and GLIM is way forward for better clinical outcomes.
