THE EFFECT OF DIETARY INTAKE AND ORAL PH ON THE PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT DENTAL RESTORATIVE MATERIALS

Rationale: Dietary intake has a critical role in the changes of oral pH, which can influence the long-term durability and performance of dental restorative materials. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of simulated dietary intake and varying pH levels on the surface properties and color stability of different dental restorative materials.
Methods: 120 standardized disc-shaped specimens were fabricated from four dental restorative materials (n=30): composite resin, feldspathic porcelain, and two types of zirconia (3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ). Specimens were then divided into three subgroups (n=10) based on immersion media: acidic (pH 2.5), neutral (pH 7.0), and alkaline (pH 9.0). Thermocycling was performed for 14 days. Surface hardness (VHN), roughness (Ra), and color change (ΔE) were mesured. Statistical analysis was done using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests (p<0.05).
Results: Composite resin showed significant decrease in hardness and increased roughness under acidic conditions (p<0.001). Feldspathic porcelain and zirconia materials showed superior stability, with slight decrease in surface hardness which were not statistically significan (p>0.05). Under neutral and alkaline conditions, no statistically significant changes were observed in any of the tested materials (p > 0.05).
Color change (ΔE) exceeded the clinically acceptable limit in composite resin under acidic conditions (ΔE = 4.8 ± 0.9), while other materials remained acceptable. Neutral and alkaline conditions showed no significant changes.
Conclusion: Acidic conditions significantly affect composite resin, while ceramics materials show superior resistance. Dietary habits and oral pH should be considered in material selection. Future studies are recommended to accurately assess the long-term clinical performance and implications.
