IS IT POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE PROTEIN TARGETS IN CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS?

Rationale: Critically ill patients often present with a state of catabolic stress and a systemic inflammatory response. This inflammatory response is also related to complications that lead to increased infectious morbidity, multiple organ dysfunction, prolonged hospital stay, and mortality.
Methods: Observational, descriptive, and retrospective study, conducted with 84 patients of both sexes, aged between 27 and 94 years, through the collection of data recorded in the electronic medical records of patients admitted to the intensive care unit from January to December 2025, who received exclusive enteral nutrition for at least 96 hours. Protein requirements were calculated according to the recommendations of the European Society for Nutrition and Endocrinology and Metabolism (ESPEN) international guidelines.
Results: During the evaluated period, the percentage of patients who met their protein requirements was 71.4%. In a 2019 study that assessed the protein adequacy of critically ill patients in a University hospital, the result was lower at 42.3%, and a significant relationship was also identified between protein deficit and mortality.
Conclusion: It is possible to achieve the protein target for critically ill patients, provided that the entire multidisciplinary team is engaged and committed to promoting adequate Nutritional Therapy for the patient, through daily and objective discussions.
