Rationale: Following bariatric surgery, the minimum recommended daily protein intake is 60g, ideally 1.2g/kg of ideal weight/day. We aimed to describe the nutritional intake of patients over 6 months following bariatric surgery.
Methods: A longitudinal study was performed in patients with obesity submitted to bariatric surgery. Nutritional intake was assessed through food frequency questionnaire at 15 days and 1 month following surgery. A three-day food diary was used to assess dietary intake at 3- and 6-months following surgery. The ideal protein intake was calculated for 1,2g/kg de ideal weight/day.
Results: A total of 45 patients were included, but only 42 fulfilled the dietary dates at 1 month, 30 patients at 3 months, and 26 patients at 6 months after surgery.
On the 15th day after surgery, an intake of 346 ± 159 calories, 1 ± 2 g of lipids, 48 ± 24 g of carbohydrates and 35 ± 16 g of proteins was observed, and on the 30th day after surgery 637 ± 150 calories, 13 ± 5 g of lipids, 57 ± 16 g of carbohydrates, and 71 ± 19 g of proteins. Only 16% patients met the average recommended protein intake of 95 ± 11 g/day.
At the 3rd month post-surgery, an intake of 784 ± 202 calories, 22 ± 8 g of lipids, 66 ± 23 g of carbohydrates, and 77 ± 23 g of proteins was observed. 20% of patients met the average recommended protein intake of 98 ± 10.1 g/day.
At the 6th month post-surgery, an intake of 962 ± 230 calories, 28 ± 9 g of lipids, 83 ± 26 g of carbohydrates, and 89 ± 22 g of proteins was observed, with average protein requirements of 101 ± 11 g. Only 19% of the patients met the protein requirements.
Conclusion: As expected, the nutritional intake of the patients progressively increased over time, and although the minimum recommended intake of 60 g of protein per day was reached by the end of the first month, most patients did not meet the protein requirements for ideal body weight.
